I ecspecially want to recognize Saige & Cheryl (the ultrasound techs) and Kelsey & Julie (the medical assistants) they were kind, compassionate, professional and were incredibly skilled at their jobs. Their friendly attitudes and reassuring care made all the difference, and I truly appreciate how they treated me as a person and not just a patient.

Symptoms of Deep Vein Thrombosis You Shouldn’t Ignore

DVT symptoms often develop in one leg, but some blood clots cause few or no noticeable warning signs. Because these symptoms can mimic other conditions, Dr. Alfieri will perform an ultrasound to accurately diagnose the clot.

Contact a medical provider right away if you notice:

  • Swelling in one leg, ankle, or foot
  • Pain or tenderness that may worsen when walking or standing
  • Red, bluish, or otherwise discolored skin
  • Unexplained warmth in the affected area
  • Tightness, cramping, or soreness in your calf or thigh
  • New symptoms after surgery, prolonged inactivity, or a long trip

Sound familiar? Let’s talk.

When to Seek Emergency Care for DVT

In some cases, a blood clot can break free and travel to your lungs. Call 911 or seek emergency care immediately if you develop signs of a pulmonary embolism, including:

  • Sudden or unexplained shortness of breath
  • Chest pain, especially when breathing deeply or coughing
  • A rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • Coughing up blood
  • Lightheadedness, fainting, or sudden weakness
  • Severe breathing difficulty or a sudden feeling that something is seriously wrong

How We Safely Treat Deep Vein Thrombosis

The right treatment depends on the clot’s location, size, severity, and risk of reaching your lungs. Before initiating care, Dr. Alfieri uses real-time ultrasound mapping to evaluate the exact extent of the clot to determine the safest approach and stop the clot from growing.

After diagnosis, your Deep Vein Thrombosis may be treated through:

Blood Thinners (Anticoagulants)

Anticoagulants prevent the clot from growing and reduce the chance of new clots forming while your body gradually breaks down the existing clot.

Clot-Busting Medications (Thrombolysis)

Thrombolytic medications dissolve blood clots more quickly and may be used for severe DVT when the benefits outweigh the risk of bleeding.

Minimally Invasive Catheter-Based Treatments

For some larger or higher-risk clots, a small catheter can deliver medication directly to the clot or mechanically remove it from the vein.

IVC Filters

We may place an IVC filter in the body’s largest vein to catch clots before they reach your lungs when blood thinners aren’t safe or appropriate.

What To Expect During Your DVT Treatment

Consultation: Dr. Alfieri will review your symptoms and medical history, and evaluate your circulation to confirm the clot’s location and determine the safest next step.

Treatment: Your plan may include blood thinners or another treatment based on the clot’s size, severity, and risk of causing further complications.

Recovery & Prevention: We’ll monitor your progress and give you clear instructions to support healing and lower your risk of another clot.

Depending on your needs, we may recommend any of the following to prevent future clots from forming:

  • Taking blood thinners exactly as prescribed
  • Walking and moving regularly to support circulation
  • Avoiding long periods of sitting during work or travel
  • Flexing your feet and legs when you can’t get up
  • Wearing compression stockings when recommended
  • Managing health conditions that raise your clot risk
  • Attending follow-up appointments to track your recovery

Causes & Risk Factors for DVT

A blood clot can form when your circulation slows, a vein is damaged, or your blood becomes more likely to clot.

Your risk may be higher if you have one or more of the following factors:

  • Long periods of sitting or limited movement during travel, desk work, or bed rest
  • Long commutes or frequent trips through nearby travel hubs
  • Recent surgery, hospitalization, a broken bone, or another serious injury
  • A personal or family history of DVT, varicose veins, or inherited clotting disorders
  • Pregnancy, recent childbirth, birth control pills, or hormone replacement therapy
  • Cancer, heart disease, inflammatory conditions, or other chronic illnesses
  • Older age, obesity, smoking, or reduced mobility
  • Previous blood clots, which can increase your risk of developing another one

Clear Answers To Help You Take Your Next Steps

Is DVT life-threatening?

DVT can become life-threatening if part of the clot breaks free and travels to your lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism. Seek care right away if you experience any blood clot symptoms.

Most DVT cases can be treated with blood thinners as opposed to surgery, but larger or higher-risk clots may require a catheter-based procedure or another intervention.

DVT treatment is often covered when it’s medically necessary, but your exact costs depend on your insurance plan, deductible, and the treatment you need.

Yes, you can develop another clot after treatment, especially if you still have ongoing risk factors, which is why follow-up care and prevention guidance are important.
